Think the Hunter Valley is the destination exclusively for wine-loving grown ups? Not at all! There are lots of fun, inexpensive activities for the whole family to enjoy-especially in the holidays and here are five of our favourites:

#1 Christmas Lights Spectacular

If your kids have not experienced the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights Spectacular, they are missing out! Wander through the picturesque gardens to see the amazing light and sound display, as well as The Story Book Garden which features infamous characters such as Cinderella and her pumpkin coach, Alice in Wonderland and heaps more! There are also amusement rides, pony rides, food and drink stalls, a music room with musical instruments and a visit from Santa! Treat your kiddies to a magical night in the garden that your children will not forget!

#2 Hunter Valley Zoo

Located in Cessnock, the Hunter Valley Zoo is a huge favourite with guests of the Cottage Hunter Valley. Pack a picnic and visit your favourite animals, wandering through interactive walk-through yards or attend one of the daily shows. The zoo is home to an excellent range of loved animals including baby Meerkats, Reptiles, cuddly Koalas and plenty more. The Zoo is opened from 9am til 4pm every day during school holidays and at only $13.00 admission for kids and family tickets available, the Hunter Valley Zoo is a fun filled and affordable outing for the family.

#3 Horse riding

What better way to enjoy the great outdoors during your stay at the Hunter than on horseback? There is a range of horse riding destinations that offer horse and pony rides for all ages, no matter your experience level. Choose from trail rides, sunset rides or even a personalised family ride with a gorgeous Hunter Valley backdrop. Horse riding is a wonderful experience that the whole family can share together, so visit one of the Valley’s favourites from Wine Country’s suggestions below:-

#4 Putt Putt and Aqua Golf

Another big favourite with the kiddies is Putt Putt and Aqua Golf. Located at the popular Hunter Valley Gardens is a 5,000 square metre lake which homes a range of floating targets for aqua golf, aside a super fun Putt Putt course to challenge the whole family! The best part is golf club hire is free for all and there are wet weather areas available, which is perfect for rainy days. There are also a range of prizes on offer from vouchers to local attractions and restaurants, as well as cash prizes!

 #5 Picnic

There is simply no better destination for a family picnic than the Hunter Valley! Picnicking is a great way for the family to enjoy a budget friendly meal in the great outdoors. Pack a yummy lunch or utilise a barbecue area at one of the many local wineries and get a game of cricket or soccer happening with the kids. The gardens at PepperTree wines is without a doubt, one of the Cottage Hunter Valley’s favourite spots, but Allandale winery, Hanging Tree Wines and pretty much anywhere in Wollombi are also wonderful places to throw down a rug and share a lazy afternoon with loved ones.
